Incarcerated men helped clear kids' lunch debt.
Many of them had gone hungry as kids. They remembered.
Men incarcerated at the Norton Correctional Facility in northwest Kansas raised $3,810 from their own accounts to help clear a local school lunch debt. Norton Community Schools, which keeps serving hot breakfasts and lunches even when family accounts go negative, finished the 2025-26 year roughly $6,000 behind on meals for kids who couldn't pay. The men heard about it and organized through Reaching Out From Within, an incarcerated-led program founded in Kansas in 1982. Staff at the Kansas Department of Corrections chipped in another $457, covering about 71% of what the district was owed. On August 3, about 30 of them gathered to hand over $4,267 to superintendent Corey Roy. Several told him afterward that they had gone hungry as children, and that it had shaped their own schooling. "I was moved at how the men I spoke with wanted to make a positive impact to help others in the community," Roy said. They did it for a young person they will never meet.

I think it gave them a sense of purpose and knowledge that they made a difference for a young person they don't even know.

The youngest orphan gorilla is raising her own baby now
She arrived at the sanctuary at 18 months. Now she's the mother.
An eastern lowland gorilla named Lulingu gave birth on May 21st in Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, one of the first of her species successfully returned to the wild and now raising an infant there. Rescuers recovered her at 18 months old, after she was taken from her family and sold into the illegal wildlife trade. She was the youngest orphan ever brought to GRACE, the only sanctuary in the world for rescued eastern lowland gorillas. Lulingu was released in December 2024 alongside three other females. Her baby was fathered by a wild silverback, proof she had integrated. The monitoring team confirmed early pregnancies the practical way, collecting urine from leaves and using human pregnancy tests. "We have seen her nursing, cradling, and playing with the baby," said Benoit Ishaba, head of gorilla monitoring on Mt. Tshiaberimu. At least one of the other rewilded females may also be pregnant.

An 81-year-old learned Minecraft and raised $150,000 for her grandson
She didn't know video games. She learned anyway.
Sue Jacquot was 81 and knew almost nothing about video games when her grandson Austin Self invited her into the family's Minecraft world. She said yes. Her other grandson, Jack Self, had been diagnosed with sarcoma in 2024 at age 14, and chemotherapy left him immunocompromised and unable to have visitors. Minecraft became the way the family stayed close. Jack and Austin found Sue's gaming so funny they told her to post it online. She launched a YouTube channel called GrammaCrackers, named for her fondness for graham crackers, and linked a GoFundMe for Jack's care. Donations reached $20,000, then kept going. The channel now has 874,000 subscribers and has raised $150,000, with a partnership supporting other families at Phoenix Children's Hospital. Jack is in remission and cancer-free. Strangers write to call her Grandma. "If you have a parent or grandparent, invite them to play a game with you," Sue says. "They might just say yes!"

Firefighters lifted the car by hand to free the bicyclist
A car on its roof. A person underneath. Six minutes.
A bicyclist pinned beneath an overturned vehicle in Columbia was freed Saturday night after firefighters lifted the car off the person by hand. Crews from the Columbia Fire Department were dispatched around 7:36 p.m. to a crash near East Business Loop 70 and Bowling Street, and arrived within six minutes. They found the vehicle resting on its roof with the bicyclist trapped underneath. Rather than wait for heavy equipment, the crew stabilized the car and started medical care on the spot. About 25 minutes after arriving, they lifted the vehicle and pulled the bicyclist out. The six-minute response time is the kind of number fire departments quietly train for and rarely get to brag about. The patient was taken to a local trauma center for further treatment.

MEDICINE • Reasons to be Cheerful
The call bells went quiet. Mothers slept and anxiety eased.
They switched the alarms back on for a safety check. The staff objected.
The Royal Cornwall Hospital in the United Kingdom silenced the buzzers on its postpartum recovery unit, and the mothers slept. Those call bells used to ring out more than 100 times a day. Now, when a patient presses a button, a quiet notification lands on a dedicated mobile device carried by the midwife assigned to her. If that person is busy, the system passes the alert to a backup. The change is part of the trust's Silent Hospital Pilot Project, launched in 2023, which treats hospital noise as data to be routed rather than a nuisance to be muffled. Rested mothers reported better sleep and less anxiety, and average stays dropped by more than half a day. Across 25 beds, that saved the trust over £70,000 in six months. When Tamsin Allen, the project's digital lead, briefly switched the ward back to audible alarms for a safety check, staff were not pleased. They kept asking how long it would be until the quiet returned.
