A barber flew in. Locals learned skin fades straightaway.
Queensland barber Jon James flew to Mornington Island, off Australia's northern coast, and found a crowd waiting on the airstrip for a trim. The island knows how to fish. It has no barber's pole, which meant residents had been waiting for a haircut roughly as long as it takes to fly one in. James came through the Fade Wellbeing Barbering Program, run by North West Remote Health, a community that has struggled with unemployment and recently lost several men to suicide. He brought 20 professional barber kits to hand out and spent his days teaching. The line for his own chair diverted fast. "I couldn't believe how quickly they picked up barbering," he said. "They're like, 'Let's go further.' And then they were doing skin fades straight up." Then a local asked him to tidy up a bride and groom for their wedding. His students handled the guests. The couple invited him to stay.
