A cashier paid the $150 bill a struggling mom couldn't
The gift cards were for the wrong store. The cashier knew the feeling.
Gina Coleman reached the checkout at a Longo's in Ontario with a cart of groceries and gift cards that did not work. The cards were for a different retailer, and the store could not accept them. Coleman, who had been staying at a Yellow Brick House shelter with her toddler, had no way to cover the bill. "I felt embarrassed. I don't have the money for it. I thought, 'What do I do?'" she told Aurora Today. The cashier, Ada Everingham, pulled out her debit card and paid the roughly $150 herself. She knew the situation from the inside. She and her mother had relied on gift cards during harder years. "I just thought I would have liked it if someone did that for me, too," Everingham said. Coleman cried, then later contacted the store's guest care team to make sure someone knew. She and her daughter move to a townhouse in Belleville on November 16, where the toddler will have her own bed for the first time.
