A grandfather wakes his grandson to watch the snow geese

Addison, Vermont · 26 October 2026

Two characters. A lot of standing in a field. That was the point.

A new picture book, Snow Geese Season, follows a grandfather who wakes his grandson before dawn to drive out and watch an annual migration. Author Angela Burke Kunkel lives in Vermont near the Dead Creek Wildlife Management Area, where snow geese cover the ground in a white blanket each fall before heading south. "It's just about one of those quiet moments in nature that end up being really important to someone," Kunkel says. Illustrator E.B. Goodale knew she had to see the geese in person, and made two trips to capture the dusky blues of the mountains before sunrise. She went out with her son, who was wearing a bright orange hat because Kunkel had warned her about hunters in the area. Goodale watched him stand in the deep blue dark in that neon hat and knew she had her scene. The book came out before Kunkel realized she had lived the same morning as a child.
