A stranger waded in and held his head above water
The surfer went under and stayed under. She was still fully dressed.
Benita Karo was filming the heavy surf along a North County San Diego beach when she watched a wave slam a surfer into the rocks and knock him out. The man floated face down and did not come up. Karo, still fully clothed, waded into the rough water, reached him, and held his head above the surface while waves kept crashing against the rocks. "I sat there with him, holding him, just trying to keep his head above water," she said. Another surfer spotted them, and people from a nearby beach house ran down to help haul the man onto shore. Emergency crews took him to the hospital. Karo picked up some minor injuries of her own. The surfer, a man named Bob who has been surfing for 50 years, is making a full recovery. He later met Karo at the hospital and called her a "heroic girl."
