A stranger's $100,000 kept the senior program alive

Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania ยท 14 July 2026

An anonymous donor gave $100,000 to keep a Pennsylvania senior program running for another year, just days after one woman went on local television to ask for help. Wesley Family Services had announced that its "Open Your Heart to a Senior" program in Westmoreland County would close for lack of federal funding. The program brings food and support to seniors who have few other options. Diana Holcomb is one of them. "I don't have anybody," she said. "I thought, 'What's going to happen? Where am I going to get food?'" So she called a TV station. "I thought the word has to get out there," she said. It did. The donor contacted the organization within days of the story airing. "Much to our surprise, and I find this very humbling and overwhelming, we had a donor come forward," said CEO Doug Muetzel. Holcomb learned the news and cried. "Wow, somebody out there cares," she said.
