An 11-year-old put on his goggles and pulled a man out

Kentucky ยท 10 July 2026

An 11-year-old boy in Kentucky is credited with pulling an unconscious man from an apartment swimming pool last week, after the adults nearby stood frozen. Avory Woolery saw that no one was moving, so he did the practical thing. He put on his goggles. "I went underwater," he told local news. "I grabbed him up and I just felt really bad because there was no way that I was going to let another man die today. He's a human being. He should be treated as such." Once Avory got the man onto solid ground, someone he assumed was a friend began CPR until first responders arrived. The man was taken to a hospital, where WKYT reported he remained in critical condition. Avory's father said he was proud. As he walked up, a stranger stopped him. "Thank you," the person said. "You taught him how to swim."
