An 18-year-old sailed solo to Hawaii. His mom waited on the dock.
Ollie Bergquist, 18, sailed solo from California to Hawaii, a 20-day crossing he documented from the boat on Instagram. The Oregon teenager funded the trip by working summers at a woodyard from the age of 13, coming home exhausted and studying sailing anyway. "This has been the most challenging and difficult year of my life, but also the most rewarding," he wrote when he reached land. His mother, Tia Bergquist, followed the whole thing from home, refreshing the same posts everyone else saw. "If he was late posting or something, I would start getting worried," she told Hawaii News Now. Every so often a text would arrive: "I'm OK, Mom." She was waiting on the dock when he arrived. Ollie plans to slow down for now, meet people, and point the boat toward the South Pacific next season.
