Five teenagers carried an injured climber down Mount Shasta
They thought they'd spend another night on the mountain. Then the sky cleared.
Five Marin County teenagers helped carry an injured climber down Mount Shasta on Tuesday, battling 70 mph winds and falling rocks as part of a 30-person ground rescue. The 39-year-old from Florida had summited on Sunday, then followed his GPS off course onto Whitney Glacier, broke through a snow bridge at about 12,600 feet, and fell into a crevasse. He had told no one where he was going, and his car was parked on the far side of the mountain. The teens, all trained rope technicians with at least two years on the team, started hiking at 5:45 a.m. carrying a litter and warming gear. Some members were hit by rocks the size of soccer balls. By late afternoon, rescuers were exhausted and a few showed signs of mild hypothermia. Then, around 5:30 p.m., the weather cleared just long enough for a helicopter to land. Cody Davis, 17, was back out that night. A different county needed help.
