The upstairs 'bowling' was her 86-year-old neighbor's walker
She climbed the stairs to complain. She stayed to help.
Heidi Widmer spent her first weeks in a Culver City apartment convinced the person upstairs was bowling at midnight. The heavy thuds went on for weeks, and the 35-year-old teacher, newly arrived from Buffalo after a divorce, was ready to march up and complain. Then she met her neighbor in the hallway. Carole, 86, British, and living with Parkinson's disease, was carrying recyclables and shaking so badly she dropped them outside Widmer's door. The noise had been her walker. Carole had lived alone for years, too proud to ask for help. Widmer began taking out the trash twice a week and cooking for her once a week, got the landlord to replace the fridge and stove, and set up a GoFundMe that has raised more than $93,000. Carole spoke to ABC7 by phone. "Heidi has come into my life, and I am deeply grateful," she said. They have settled on terms. Carole calls Widmer her granddaughter.
