Diana Pereira found the cat hiding in a washroom, barely able to move, cold and in pain. A vet in Medellin, Colombia, diagnosed pyometra, a serious uterine infection that can turn fatal without surgery. Pereira launched a crowdfunding campaign to cover the operation, and her friends pitched in without hesitation. The plan afterward was straightforward. Find a family willing to take the cat and cover her ongoing care. Pereira started the search, then quietly abandoned it, because she had already fallen for the patient she was supposed to hand off. She took time away from work to nurse the cat through recovery, week by week. The cat now lives with her, playing as though none of it happened. "Now it's so satisfying to watch her move and jump around," Pereira said.
