Strangers ran toward the fire. Now 67 scholarships honor them.
Four people ran toward the flames. Now her mother funds the rest.
A Texas foundation has awarded 67 scholarships totaling $67,000 to students who showed heroism and compassion, five years after an 18-year-old named Kenli Riney died in a highway crash. Riney's car spun into a ditch and caught fire after a head-on collision. The Argote family, driving behind her, saw it happen. Mike Argote and three other men ran toward the flames and pulled her out. He was burned doing it and began CPR anyway. When he tired, his 14-year-old daughter Ema took over. The family ended up praying around the stranger on the road. Riney's relatives didn't know who the rescuers were until an uncle found a Facebook post. Her parents, Marjohn and Kevin, later founded the Kenli Foundation in Kerrville. "Strangers ran toward the fire," Marjohn Riney said. "We exist to find more people like them." The first year drew four applicants. This year drew 451. Ema graduated high school this spring, and the foundation gave her a scholarship too.
