They carved a brass section from jalapenos and played it
Your mother said not to play with your food. They didn't listen.
The London Vegetable Orchestra recently recorded a track at Abbey Road Studios using instruments carved entirely from produce. Jalapenos and avocado pits formed the brass section, an onion became a bass, and lettuce handled percussion. The song, "From Ground to Sound," came out of a three-month collaboration with Chipotle, which supplied the ingredients and watched its menu get played. The ensemble formed in 2010 among professional musicians studying at the Royal Academy of Music, and it bills itself as the only U.K. group offering "Home Grown" entertainment. The hardest part was the vegetables themselves, which refuse to cooperate on schedule. "No two vegetables ever behave exactly the same way," orchestra member Patrick Johns said. "You can carve two identical instruments, but they can respond very differently." The craft, he said, is not forcing an ingredient to sound a certain way but finding the sound already there. The instruments have a short shelf life. They play, then they wilt.
