A 9-year-old's CPR saved his church youth leader.

Logan VanGemert, 9, performed CPR on a fellow church member in Martin, Michigan, one day after watching a training video at school. His elementary school was running the Kids Heart Challenge, which awards prizes for learning about heart disease. Logan's motivation was less clinical. "If I watch all the videos, I'll win a superhero cape," he told his mom. The next day at church, longtime youth leader Tom Adriance slumped from his seat and landed face down as the children prepared to sing. His wife of 45 years, Beth, has CPR training but froze at the thought of performing it on her husband. Logan dropped to the floor and pushed on Tom's chest until adults arrived with a defibrillator. Doctors later said Tom had suffered total cardiac arrest. He survived bypass surgery with no neurological damage. Logan got his hero awards, and eventually the cape, which he wore to a Heart Association meeting.
