A flight attendant held the baby so mom could sleep

Grand Rapids, Michigan ยท 11 September 2026

The baby was slipping. Someone was watching.

Republic Airways flight attendant Monique Harris was working a September 2 morning flight from Newark to Grand Rapids, Michigan, when she noticed a new mother nodding off with her baby in her lap. As the mother drifted, the baby began to slip. Harris caught him, held him, and told the exhausted mom to go back to sleep. A passenger, John W. Frehse, photographed the moment without Harris noticing and posted it online, where it spread. When the mother woke and saw Harris holding her son, her first fear was that she had dropped him. She hadn't. The mom had recently given birth abroad and had only just been able to fly home. Her family had not yet met the baby. Harris, who has spent years slipping encouraging notes to passengers, left her one too. "She was doing a great job," Harris told ABC News. "She's stronger than she feels."
