A wrong turn put a stranger at their door in time
A wrong turn. A house on fire. He could have kept driving.
A GPS error sent a driver named Casey down Highway 114 near Lyerly, Georgia on Saturday night, a road he had never traveled. At the top of a hill, he saw flames coming from a house where James and Larita Burke slept with their 11 children and one grandchild. He stopped. James woke in his recliner to a stranger standing in his living room. "The next thing I know, some guy was telling me in my living room, 'Hey, you've got to get out of here. Your house is on fire,'" James recalled. Casey went into the burning home and helped carry the children out, then flagged down firefighters. Everyone survived, though the house and most of what was in it did not. "If it had been another five minutes, it would've been a different situation. We wouldn't have made it," Larita said. By morning, the phone would not stop. Neighbors called to ask what the family needed. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
