Firefighters reached the stranded climber in just 42 minutes

White County, Georgia ยท 10 September 2026

His fear wasn't the 250-foot drop. It was his dad seeing it.

Thomas Perry was trapped 250 feet up Mount Yonah in Georgia, free-climbing without ropes when a routing mistake left him stranded on a ledge about 20 inches wide. Around 7:00 p.m., he found a faint cell signal and called 911 to reach White County Public Safety. On the dispatch audio obtained by Inside Edition, Perry stayed calm. His main worry was not the drop. It was the coverage. "I'm not going on the news or anything, am I?" he asked. The dispatcher chuckled and said, "I don't think so, no." "I don't want my dad to start worrying about me," Perry explained. Drones located him on the rock face, and firefighter Will Roper rappelled down to reach him. "That's the first time that I've ever done it, kind of in the heat of the moment with a live subject," Roper told Fox News. Crews got Perry down in 42 minutes. He made the evening news anyway.
