Catherine swam 900 miles, the first down California's coast
Three years of planning. Then a Super El Niño showed up.
Catherine Breed has become the first person to swim the length of California's coastline, covering roughly 900 miles in 111 days. She waded out at the Oregon-California border on July 1st and landed on a pier on October 19th, having passed the Mexico border more than three miles out to sea to skirt the pollution of the Tijuana River. The plan took three years and assumed 10 miles a day for 90 days. Then a Super El Niño arrived, with tropical storms and seven-foot waves that made Breed feel she was swimming through a washing machine. There were eight separate shark encounters. There were also sea lions and whales. "You cannot bring hubris or expectations into the ocean," she told KQED. "When I get in the ocean, it's a full surrender." Breed, who has crossed the English Channel, says she is still trying to grasp what she did. So is everyone else.
