He lost his studio to fire. Neighbors built him a museum.
He lost his life's work in a fire. So they built a museum.
A decommissioned 1950s Airstream, rebuilt over the course of a year, opened this week as the Museum of Delight, a traveling raffle of handmade objects touring New York City and Upstate New York. The project is a collaboration between writer Maria Popova of The Marginalian and her neighbor Ryan Vahey, a multidisciplinary artist who watched his studio burn down in a neighborhood fire that took his entire life's work and all his equipment. Each time the museum opens, eleven objects are given away by raffle. You pay what you wish, in person or remotely, so long as the amount ends in the decimal .11. Whether you enter with $1.11 or $10,000.11, your odds are identical. The only thing that changes is how much you help Ryan rebuild. The museum, which cannot be parked in the city without a special permit, makes its next stop at a Woodstock Japanese restaurant on October 25.
