He spent his house deposit on grandad. A stranger repaid it.
A 21-year-old England fan named Jacob Allmendinger spent his house deposit, about $13,000, to take his 80-year-old grandad to the World Cup in the USA and Mexico. Then a stranger gave it all back. Allmendinger and Geoff Golliker, who have gone to matches together in Hull since Jacob was a boy, traveled to New York and Atlanta before witnessing England's 3-2 win at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. Their story went viral, and a US-based crypto casino called Metawin promised to repay the money. An unsolicited pledge from a crypto casino is not one any sensible person takes to heart, and Allmendinger was skeptical. Then the money landed. "I didn't quite believe it, to be honest, until I looked at my bank and it was there," he said. He plans to save it for now. On the trip that started it all: "We get on like a house on fire. We're more best mates than grandad and grandson."
