He left Chile on foot. 28 years later, he's nearly home.
He set one rule. No going home until he walked there.
British adventurer Karl Bushby has nearly finished a walk he started 28 years ago. He left the southern tip of Chile with two rules: no transportation to advance, and no going home to England until he arrived there on foot. He now aims to reach his mother's house in Hull by Nov. 1. The idea came from a birthday card his father gave him, recounting an argument between two UK Special Forces members over whether you could walk from London to New York via the Bering Strait. Bushby decided to find out, and to go farther. His Goliath Expedition took him through the Darien Gap, across 58 miles of Bering Strait ice over 14 days, and recently across the English Channel by swimming, after being denied access to the tunnel. The cost was not only physical. He has a granddaughter he has never met. "I'd like to drag it out longer if I could," he said.
