Jason Burns spent two months training in secret so he could run his girlfriend's first half marathon beside her without her knowing. Emma Kessler, 22, had been anxious for weeks about the Rockin' Riverfest Half Marathon in St. Charles, Missouri, and kept asking Burns to join. He kept saying no. He was a competitive powerlifter, and Kessler had never missed one of his events. "I didn't really think it's fair if I sit on the side of the course and only see her for 30 seconds during her two-hour race," he told USA Today. So he registered quietly and slipped his running shoes into the trunk on race morning. He also printed an old text from Kessler that read, "I wish you'd run half marathons w/ me." When she saw the shoes, she cried. "No, you're lying, are you really doing it?" she asked. They finished together in 2 hours and 29 minutes, both wearing medals. "Way better now that we're done," Kessler said.
