High school students opened an auto shop. Bring your oil.
You bring the parts. They learn the trade.
High school students in Houston's Fifth Ward have opened a public auto shop, and starting every Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., they will change your oil, rotate your tires, and run a multi-point inspection. Customers bring their own parts and fluids and pay for student labor, which funds the next class. The shop runs through the Houston Independent School District's Barbara Jordan Career Center, which serves 12 campuses and more than 1,200 students in northeast Houston. The center has pushed to expand hands-on training since a local education group found that fewer than 20% of Houston ISD graduates were earning a living wage six years after leaving school. The automotive program spent the summer getting the shop ready, aiming to build what the career center called "both soft skills and technical know-how." Bringing your own fluids is not the most convenient option around. But the oil change pays forward the next student who learns to spot that sound.
