Passing firefighters got the driver out of the water safely

Canton, Ohio ยท 5 August 2026

They were off duty. They stopped anyway.

Two firefighters were driving on I-77 when they spotted a car that had left the road and landed in a creek below. They stopped. They waded in. Bolivar and Canton crews were credited with pulling the driver to safety, according to WKYC, in a rescue that came down to being in the right place at the right time. Off-duty firefighters do not technically clock out. They tend to notice things other drivers speed past, like a vehicle in water where no vehicle should be. The pair got the driver out of the creek and onto solid ground before conditions could worsen. Both departments were praised for the response. The driver, pulled from the water by two people who happened to be passing, went home.
