Strangers kept her alive until paramedics reached the river
He had never used a defibrillator in a real emergency. He stepped forward anyway.
Kaley Koppa, 43, collapsed on a bench during a morning run along the Brisbane River last week, and strangers kept her alive until paramedics arrived. Security footage shows her slowing down and clutching her left arm before she went down. She was in cardiac arrest. Doctors later said she had clinically died. One bystander called emergency services. "Her face is blue ... She's just saying she's not breathing," the caller told dispatchers. Others began CPR. Staff from the nearby Star Casino spotted the scene and ran over with a defibrillator, among them a security worker named Trevor Tyrna, who had never used one in a real emergency. He stepped forward anyway. Roughly one in ten people survive an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest, which is why the minutes before an ambulance matter so much. "I can't believe I am still alive," Koppa said of the people she had never met.
