Thirty minutes of careful digging, and two people walked away
Sand looks harmless. It does not let go easily.
Green Bay firefighters freed a person trapped chest-deep in sand on Wednesday afternoon, the Green Bay Metro Fire Department said. Crews were called to 1516 Atkinson Drive around 2:20 p.m. for a report of someone stuck up to their chest, which drew a large response because of how tricky sand rescues are. Loose sand behaves less like solid ground and more like a slow trap, tightening as a person struggles. The extrication took 30 minutes. Firefighters eventually worked the person free and sent them to a local hospital for further treatment. One firefighter was hurt during the effort, though the injury was minor enough to be treated and released at the scene. The department did not release the person's name or how they ended up chest-deep in the first place. Thirty minutes of careful digging, and two people walked away.
