Weekend fishermen reached the sinking car in under a minute

Mount Juliet, Tennessee · 3 November 2026

No tool to break the glass. So they used the boat.

A group of fishermen pulled a woman from a sinking car at Old Hickory Lake in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, reaching her in under a minute after her vehicle drove into the water at the Shutes Branch Recreation Area. The men fish the lake on weekends and heard the car before they saw it. "We heard this loud motor revving up, and when we looked, this car just come, pooh, popped into the water," Jackie Light said. Cellphone video captured what happened next. The woman was holding the doors closed and did not respond as they knocked on the windows. Nobody had a tool to break the glass, so one of the men used his boat to ram the car until the rear window popped out, and they reached in and pulled her free. They are not calling themselves heroes. "I'm no hero," Ronnie Smythia said. "Just reacting. Not thinking. Just reacting."
