A stranger promised lumber in 30 minutes. Trucks came.
He told the cameras he wanted nothing. Someone brought a crew anyway.
A silver maple crashed through Gilbert Kirk's roof during a recent storm in Wyandotte County, Kansas, trapping the 71-year-old and his dog Beetle underneath for hours. Kirk told KCTV 5 he wasn't looking for a miracle or an insurance handout. Two days later, a stranger showed up on his debris-covered lawn and said he would be back in 30 minutes with lumber and a crew. "OK, whatever, you know," Kirk remembered thinking. "And then the next thing I know, he's back with a load of lumber, and the next thing I know, there were just trucks." The crew who tarped the maple-shaped gash in his house turned out to be local residents, among them Steven Vega. "We just did what was right and needed to be done," Vega wrote. Kirk now has a roof again, plus a small arsenal of fans drying the place out. He has called Vega every day to say thank you.
