Surgeons in Turin have performed what they describe as a world-first: the simultaneous transplant of a complete human macula, cornea and connective tissue from one of a patient's eyes to the other. The patient, a 67-year-old woman named Elena, had been blind for several years after a road crash severed the optic nerve in her left eye while destroying the retina and cornea in her right. Each eye held part of what the other lacked. Professor Michele Reibaldi, an ocular surgeon at Molinette Hospital, resolved to move the working tissue from the left eye into the right, where the optic nerve had survived. The operation ran six hours, which he called a "complicated marathon." Follow-ups confirm the tissues have reattached and that Elena is regaining sight. When she opened her eyes, she recognized her son and Joe, the family dog. The dog, presumably, had waited.
