The son said take the sad one. They did.
She wanted zero new pets. Her son had other plans.
Juno arrived at a PetSmart adoption area at a moment when Susan, a reader from Euclid, Ohio, wanted exactly zero additional pets. She had lost her 18-year-old cat and, six months later, her 15-year-old Samoyed. One cat felt like enough. Her husband and son disagreed. While browsing for a future dog, her son dragged her to the cat cages and announced they had to take the sad one. Susan resisted until she saw the animal herself. Every other cat was active and greeting visitors. Juno was pressed against the back wall, an owner surrender due to illness, just turned one, and visibly depressed. So they took her home. A month later they added a rescue dog, which did not speed things up. Juno is five now and belongs firmly to Susan's husband. She waits for him on the couch every morning and scolds him when he is slow to sit down with his coffee.
