A sewer robot named R2D2 nudged a trapped kitten free
The crew tried a camera and their hands. The cat refused.
A sewer crew in West Valley City, Utah, pulled a kitten out of a drain pipe in mid-October using a remote-controlled crawler normally reserved for inspecting sewage lines. The device, nicknamed R2D2, carries a live camera and lights and looks roughly like a toy truck. Footage released by the city government shows it nudging the stranded kitten down the pipe until the animal finally crawled into the open. Crew members from the public works department first tried a pole camera to locate the cat, then attempted to coax it out by hand. According to the city, it "wouldn't budge." So they sent in the robot, which bopped the kitten along until it gave up and climbed out. "R2D2 is usually used to inspect pipes," officials said, "but now it can add 'kitten rescuer' to its list of functions." The kitten declined to comment.
